The Center for Basic Molecular Science (CBMS) at Tsinghua University was founded in 2012 by Professor Jin-Pei Cheng. CBMS focuses on fundamental research in molecular science based on physical organic chemistry. The center conducts basic and innovative scientific research in multiple fields of molecular science, including chemical bonding energetics and the principles in chemical transformations and synthesis. The center currently has 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 associate researchers, and 1 assistant researcher. The current director of the center is Professor Sanzhong Luo.
Research conducted at CBMS focuses on the structure of matter, bond energy, and reactivity scale, providing basis for fostering interdisciplinary research in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and energy science. We aim to develop new methods and principles for efficient chemical transformations via the quantitative study of structure-property relationship and rational design. The goal of the center is to build a world-class physical organic chemistry research center, and to cultivate innovative talents with rational cognition and practical ability.
Since its foundation, CBMS has set up state-of-the-art research facilities and has undertaken major research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The center has gradually formed a high-level scientific research innovation platform, and we continue to pursue excellence in chemical research.
